"Perception of experts" - While ranking the universities around the world, 60% weightage is assigned to perception of experts distributed over three categories. Indian universities fare badly in there and we are beaten with that stick even by our own policy makers @Sandeep_1966

I make the same point as is made in this video - Please "rank" using ONLY hard data but I guess the ranking agencies aren't interested as hard data cannot be left to interpretation of "experts"! Tragedy is - "ignoring" such perception based categorization is not an option!

Scandal? You know what is a scandal? Women giving birth in the US have the HIGHEST DEATH RATE in the industrialized world. Apparently, women dying due to negligence is no big deal to you.https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2018/05/10/maternal-deaths-mothers-mortality-column/595818002/ …
-
Caring about an academic scandal does not preclude you from caring about women dying as a result of negligence during childbirth. These things are not mutually exclusive. Framing this as if Pinker doesn't care about such an issue is, at best, a dishonest & uncharitable tactic.
-
I disagree. The big picture Pinker is pushing is that it is outrageous to suggest women's rights are in danger in the US. Having the highest rate of maternal mortality in the industrialized world suggests otherwise. Why does Pinker ignore this?
-
The point he was making is that the study he was referring to lacks any sort of rigor and was simply bad science. Being the worst country in the industrialized world for maternal mortality is horrendous and this study is is deeply flawed. Both are true.
-
To expect anyone to touch on a specific point orthogonally related to the one they are actually making is not a reasonable expectation, especially on Twitter.
-
I certainly don't expect anyone to share deep insights on the Twitter. However, what someone chooses to highlight is indeed revealing of bias/agenda. I am puzzled by Pinker's and Haidt's mission to convince women & minorities how GREAT our lives are "historically speaking".
-
Didn't realize you could read minds. That's an impressive talent. Although if you cannot read minds then assuming motives based on someone NOT addressing an orthogonally related issue would be uncharitable. Perhaps applying the principle of charity would benefit our discourse.

Actually, this is indeed an informative and alarming study ... of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, the power of confirmation-bias in reporters, and the inability of many to accept the plain realities of the world that surrounds them.

I think you are not getting it,
@sapinker is trying to show how bad data can effect perception. We are living in an age of informational overload where people like trump, Putin and Kim Jong manipulate media as they see fit. We need our journalists to be more careful then ever. -
I want to add one more entity TDK and Pappu team also use Media to manipulate heavily in India.
