Steven we hear you, but right now conservatives are putting kids in cages. Let’s increase the bandwidth on that issue ?

This assumption that "liberals" take issue with free speech and "conservatives" are helping them to understand 1A is ridiculous.
-
If you change it to the far left as opposed to liberals, I agree. Calling the far left "liberal" at this point is an abuse of the word. This doesn't include actual liberals who are usually center-left/center-right. All of the deplatforming clowns I've seen are far left.
-
All the "far left" is doing is speaking. It's the right that's actually attempting to legally enjoin certain kinds of speech they don't like.

Odd article title. Free speech inherently ‘favors’ whatever groups are currently NOT in power in sector X and thus acts as a balance.

Yes! Also conservatives should not retreat from commitment to free speech just because some of the media reveals their leader’s corruption.

I thought you were all about statistical data. What evidence do you have that "liberals" are retreating from commitment to free speech? Spare me the anecdotal university protest narratives.

ACLU determining that it would stop taking certain free speech cases based on the content of the speech:https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-aclu-retreats-from-free-expression-1529533065 …

Point taken. However: 1.ACLU, as a nonprofit, depends on donations. Donors seriously weighed in after Charlottesville. 2. White supremacism is not conservatism. 3. ACLU case peripheral to Pinker's gross generalization.
-
1) Sure. I think their donors are being illiberal, and I rethink my donations to the ACLU when they start working on content prioritization. 2) That's true (though growing less true). 3) Center left folks dropping donations to ACLU seems like exactly what he's talking about.

White supremacism is stupid and awful, but free speech *cannot* hinge on whether or not something is a "legitimate political position". If you have legitimate and illegitimate positions you must necessarily have legitamizers of political positions. This is deeply illiberal.
-
Agree. Which brings us full circle. I find Pinker's penchant for presenting such issues as "liberal/conservative " insufferable.

I'm a free speech absolutist, but I think you know that liberals who are free speech skeptics didn't get that way "just because" of conservative speech.

If you're against free speech you are not liberal, by definition.
