New study by my former PhD student James Lee (+ 80 et al's) finds >1000 genetic variants which collectively predict a big chunk of variance in educational attainment | Nature Geneticshttps://www.nature.com/articles/s41588-018-0147-3 …

Overplayed. You can predict much more of the variance of ed attain straight from socio-economic measures at age 5. Like 4x more. See work of Saez at UC Berkeley.

In the samples studied, parental education and income together (which is how SES is often operationalized) explain less than twice as much as the polygenic scores. And SES is of course a heavily genetically confounded variable.pic.twitter.com/BXwWisiqEq

For those liking the tweet, I hope they understand a pseudo-R isn’t in a cross sectional association study does not a causal claim make.

Polygenic scores are ”assigned” at conception, so it’s not really cross-sectional. Causal claims always come from theory which is strong in this case.

Haven’t read the other literature, eh? That ‘confounded’ is an understatement. The time point difference doesn’t really illuminate the link between the variables - just places a sequence.

I know the literature well. Polygenic prediction is just another way of showing an effect that has been well established in previous twin and adoption research.

Happy to have the debate with real people, full references, claims, etc. I’ll pass on continuing with an anonymous tweeter account.

At this point it just seems like the cognitive science community is easing their way up to the great unspeakable truth to keep people's heads from exploding.

Not really. Just asking what someones parents do is more predictive.

That could be a problem for someone purporting to demonstrate 100% nature. But nobody says that. On the other hand, there are lots of people that hold to a near 100% nurture viewpoint. It's the backtop to disparate impact logic, after all.

I've seen this study posted with the opposite commentary. I guess I need to read the paper.
