Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant analysis. "Tolerance of individual rights appears to be closer to an ultimate driver, in that more people are included in economic activity, especially women "

There is no doubt that secularization precedes economic growth, but is economic growth the ultimate goal for humanity?

Showing that one variable lags another doesn't demonstrate causation. A third factor could be driving both (you wouldn't say that a forecast of rain causes rain even though it is a lagging indicator). Modern social science looks for natural experiments to deal with this problem.

My Ph.D. dissertation argued similar point: the breakdown of the Catholic Church's political power in Europe during the 16th & 17th centuries lessened the moral and social impediments to building a liberal capitalist order that then competed with mercantilism. I feel smug now.

I wonder if the reverse is true. Does desecularization precede economic decline? It seems likely. Desecularization precedes decline in pretty much every other area.

But presuming further secularization will promote further economic growth falls into yet another fallacious trap - never draw conclusions by extrapolation, only interpolation.https://twitter.com/sapinker/status/1021385669539762176?s=21 …

Greed is good. Jesus said that. No before the movie Wall Street came out Ivan Boesky said greed is good at my brother's Cal Berkeley graduation. I wanted to throw up, I was still in high school and this was the finest public university at the time, supposedly.
