I see reducing pessimism as a key to breaking down political polarization. Pessimism is frequently political, and blaming the other side prevents constructive dialogue. If only there were a way to convince the general public that things are generally going really well...

When you’re an American and you’ve seen 230 years of a democracy get flushed down the toilet right before your eyes, along with the protections for our environment, it’s so very hard to remain optimistic about anything.

Activists often catastrophize to mobilize. This conscious and active strategy to exaggerate problems to elicit the motivating power of fear seems under-reported in this work.

At the library last week and the only book of yours they had on the shelf was “The Blank Slate.” Reading it now and quite enjoying it. Looking forward to reading some of your recent work.

Furthermore @sapinker completely fails to explain the rise of populism across the western world. Does he seriously think that this is just about people misremembering the past. If so, why now?

I have read Enlightenment Now, in most respects I found it a good book. It makes a good case that the world is a better place to live than 200 years ago. When looking at conditions for working class people in western countries over the last 40 years, the book is thin.
