A counterpoint to fatalism: Reminders from data and everyday life on how much has improved, and on the middle-age blues. https://www.ft.com/content/e60f067e-85f2-11e8-a29d-73e3d454535d … via @financialtimes

Has anyone told you you picked a hell of a time to promote contrarian optimism? It tends to make typical level headedness seem like propaganda.

I don't know what "typical level headedness" looks like, and would guess the average person doesn't know either. There seems to be so much negativity, in spite of all of the positive metrics in our world.

Negativity and hate are easy to do and it makes one feel smart. I think that is why people do it.

It’s easier to be hateful anonymously online. Twitter is often like high school, with millions sitting at the mean kids’ table. The happy difference is that Twitter is easier to tailor (block/mute) or turn off in favor of a more fulfilling life. 🙂 Still, not fun being berated…

Stinker is just simply losing his libido, thus, becoming more optimistic. Happens to most as they age. Data or not, his view on the world is subjective.

I wonder if the impulse to call him Stinker is somehow ironically emblematic.

Job scarcity and economic insecurity is threatening to tear this nation apart, in case you have not noticed. The voters clearly favor any extremist who promises to destroy the status quo which you are celebrating. 🧐

Trends are always in the direction of things are getting better. Question really comes down to the rate at which things are improving. We have been in a period of low rate the last few decades.

Steven, I would love to hear your thoughts on current events with Trump and Putin in Helsinki. I admire your optimism and reliance on statistics but are you not the least bit alarmed? If this goes badly the world will very soon become as very unsafe place.
