Putin may have compromat on Trump, but the Malignant-Narcissist-in-Chief may also have a dangerous fantasy about the world order that can explain his obsequiousness. | openDemocracyhttps://www.opendemocracy.net/transformation/ian-hughes/does-donald-trump-s-foreign-policy-actually-make-sense …

Speculating on the inner thoughts of another person is a "dangerous fantasy". Please, someone with authority, remind intellectuals that mind reading has been debunked.

These guys are just talking about how to continue to make the world a better place. Isn’t that right, Pinker?!

100% agree. Pinker is just losing his drive to mate, thus, the rise in optimism. I’m seeing this with most aging scientists.

It is possible, he may see it as a world ruled by elites... And as long as the oligarchy can be maintained they are happy. This may mean that this isn’t really about the USA vs Russia at all, but about the largest inequality between rich and poor we will ever see. #JustThinking

Trump's self-involvement is not unlike a blackhole. Anything beyond the event horizon doesn't exist. It's all about me. Me. Me. Me. To overstate the obvious, Trump wants in on Russian oligarch money. Full stop.

It’s also vintage Machiavelli: build a coalition with the thus-far weak and attack the thus-far strong. Leaving naught but you at the top of the pile.

@kamorant not political? Calling the President, "Malignant-Narcissist-in-Chief " is a political statement. It's freedom of speech to make such a statement and I would die to defend Pinker's right to do so, but yes - he is political.

Malignant Narcissist is a medical term that appears to match Trump's erratic, odd and dangerous behaviour. Steven's use of the word may be politically motivated, but the term has empirical evidence to support its accuracy in regards to Trump.

I'm a HUGE fan of yours. I'm NOT a fan of Trump. I'm in ch. 24 of Enlightenment Now. The book's excellent until you descend into politics. I fear you're blinded by your dislike. You cite some opinions mingled with facts. I hope this doesn't mean the rest of the book is tainted!

I mean am I more glad to have had it than not? Yes. Last 1/3 of the book is pretty bad tho, I thought. Glad someone enjoyed it. I liked Nassim Taleb's skin in the game..would suggest giving it a go next if you can.

You know, that's exactly right. The first 2/3 were WONDERFUL and a bit mind-bending, too! I adored the stats and the challenge to my preconceptions!
