I've read 3 or 4 critiques of Enlightenment Now, and I keep coming back to my take: the theme was more "Things have gotten and are continuing to get better for us" and why that is than a technical definition and defense of "The Enlightenment".

Yes exactly, it’s really about the subtitle, humanism, science, reason, and progress.

“does this mean his own arguments are not reasoned” ... really? C’mon. This isn’t a late night dorm room argument. Pretty sure you know what
@JonahNRO meant. -
Agreed...I think
@JonahNRO is saying that Enlightenment values did not favor pure reason to the total exclusion of and/or repudiation of earlier beliefs and philosophies.

Would it surprise you to know that I became a Christian through reason? Raised secular Buddhist, Atheist until September 2017. I have “good reasons” for what I now believe... and there is also “good reason” to have faith. Happy to explain and answer any questions - over video!

Idk if the enlightenment itself was racist, but it would be really strange if Europeans of the 18th century weren't racist...

Every theoretical process is going to have the taint of cultural aesthetic political bias. Outcomes can only be measured objectively up until the point they become subjective. European enlightenment is likely just one cultural aesthetic source of universalist epistemology.

The Enlightenment is supposed to be based on logic and reasoning and not so much on ethics and morals. So, obviously Racism could at least economically be defended (Social-Darwinism, Colonialism etc.) from a logic stand point.

I read that piece in the print version of NR. He was defending what I would call the "cultural backbone" of the enlightenment. I can't argue with that per se, if correct. I haven't read your book yet (though I have it) so I cannot really say what he was really objecting to.
