Was the Agricultural Revolution humanity's greatest blunder? Are we suffering from "wheat belly" and "grain brain"? In a fascinating and brilliant essay, historian Rachel Laudan begs to differ. https://thebreakthrough.org/index.php/journal/no.-9-summer-2018/with-the-grain …

Why is it that grain/wheat people are so sensitive? White rice is fueling a diabetes epidemic in India and nobody feels compelled to remind us about how important rice is for humanity...http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/95/8/17-020817/en/ …

My problem with the agricultural revolution is not that it created civilization, is not that it is a potentially damaging diet source, and that it's an environmental disaster. All of those are horrible, but my real problem...

Is that its assumed that the ag revolution is the pinnacle of food production. The perspective is that we've arrived. No more innovation necessary. The current cereal grain as staple food crop model is perfect! That's what proponents of the current model would have you believe.

Not what most believe. It is a continuum- new tech, big data, new genetics will balance farmer profit, food security and environmental sustainability. Those are the conversations going on.

All of those conversations are from within the annual ag framework. Revolutions, such as the agricultural revolution, are by definition, contrary to the dominant framework. My issue is that annual ag proponents claim there is no need for the next revolution. I disagree.

She is just saying the obvious: we cannot feed the world with meat and fruits. They cost too much. And still, grains are less good for us, because the evolutionary process that allows us to digest them is not over.

An amazing feature by ag historian, @rachellaudan . Those who consider the life of hunters-gathers to have been superior should read comparisons of their existence versus that of indignous farmers in NE North America, eg, read 'Champlain's Dream,' https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champlain%27s_Dream …

The problem is over consumption. Anything consumed in huge quantity will cause problems. We don't know who to blame so we constantly point at facts. Carbs etc... its US folks! Consume in moderation and walk for Godsake!

With a few notable exceptions, the absolute last people from whom you should take nutrition advice are MDs and nutritionists. They’re still pushing the government food pyramid which is responsible for the obesity epidemic.
