A recurring attack on Enlghtenment Now is that I was mean to Nietzsche, but in a new TLS essay, Nietzsche scholar Brian Leiter affirms that "The truth is terrible."https://www.the-tls.co.uk/articles/public/friedrich-nietzsche-truth-terrible/ …

Um, I think the worry is that you didn’t bother to engage his work, just bowdlerizations of it.

Your criticism is 2 dimensional. Nietzsche’s glorification of human excellence can also be seen not as an attack on Enlightenment , but it’s fundamental drive. He was the first philosopher I read to really wrestle with being a humanist honestly.

“Nietzsche...diagnoses capitalist modernity...Donald Trump as its...ruler, Twitter with its 24/7 “derision” as its appendage, and...world market that tells us what “happiness”...is...its price. In such a world, perhaps Schopenhauer is right?” Leiter affirms N and disaffirms you.

I just get annoyed when people say this: “Nietzsche was very clear about... “— Nietzsche was far from being clear about anything...

If he was "far from being clear about anything" then no one would read him anymore.

People still read Pinker & Peterson, tho, so that's clearly false.

You're clearly mapping difficulty with reading comprehension onto three different people.

lol the point is that Nietszche’s obscurity is independent of his being read, but I took the opportunity to dunk on two popular, but odiously uncritical & soporifically blithe, authors—Pinker & Peterson—who are oft read and boosted by the same people.

Interesting except for the totally disconnected comment about President Trump at the end. Liberals are totally committed to promoting hedonism and degeneracy not the right.

No worry, Nietzsche can take it. “What doesn’t kill us make us stronger!” Actually we should be discussing Nietzsche much more. And in detail...

Happiness undermines the pursuit of excellence, which is the only thing that makes existence tolerable. Happiness is the only thing that makes existence tolerable. Fixed that for you Nietzsche.
