Good principles, but doomed by the increasingly fashionable habit of condemning those of opposing POV as beyond the bounds of engagement. But to condemn rather than engage reveals root motivation: do you want to actually make things better, or just enjoy a self-righteous rant?

Yeah. You nailed it. 90% of the people on this medium (and elsewhere) are only looking for repetition of their POV. Any dissent is met with an attack. No attempt at all is made to understand the other perspective.
-
Even sharing the same core beliefs is not enough, you MUST parrot all the talking points to a tee. Any deviation is met with an assault.

Worthless nonsense. Most Republicans now have a higher opinion of Vladimir Putin then Nancy Pelosi. The propaganda machine that brought them there has also made them utterly intractable. And Pinker, like it or not, you are part of that machine.

Did you even read the article?

You cannot, almost by definition, have a decent conversation with people who outright reject reality.
-
Are you sure there are no elements of reality that you outright reject?
-
I have never rejected any scientifically sound explanation for something without having a more sound scientific explanation. And if I have neither I prefer “I don’t know” over making something up. And I actively seek to know my own biases, understand them, and mitigate or correct
-
That's an excellent start. The next step is to realize that there are elements of reality that you reject outright and don't realize it. You don't know what they are, but they are there -- and some of them may be cases where you believe others are rejecting reality.

It could start with ditching the partisan lies and having an honest conversation for once... but seeing the media coverage of topics today.. we're extremely far from that ideal.

I appreciate that the author is a journalist calling themselves out as part of the problem.
-
Is this basically what you do with your show?

Actually not so much, but media sensationalism is definitely something we’re trying to go against. We have on guests from every walk of life to talk about today’s relevant topics in long form conversational formats. Unlike so much of MSM media ;) I would love for you to tune in!
-
I’m just starting to do something similar with friends and family, so yes - and I’ll be taking notes! Long form conversations are the way to go! Thank you for supplying another source of this re-emerging media.

This is encouraging. And very similar to 'SALT' - a technique that emerged in Zambia during the 1980s AIDS crisishttps://www.arukahnetwork.org/single-post/130318 …
