Pundits too often conflate "liberal order" with "American-led." US has not been at the forefront of a rule-based international system (which itself has not characterized the world in the first postwar decades). Patrick Porter disputes popular nostalgia.https://www.cato.org/publications/policy-analysis/world-imagined-nostalgia-liberal-order …

Couldn't agree more - the Liberal Order is assigned to European nations only; those founded through the history of the Western Liberal Tradition. The US is a young state with no real clue what it wants vis a vis political philosophy.

When America was young, it’s very liberal ideas were considered naive, and foolish. Most of Europe was still ensconced in kings and queens ruling with religion as the partner in spiritual matters. The U.S. Bill of Rights, was the liberal revolution. Look closer in time.

Right, but so too when European nations were young, were they liberal too, going as far back as Alexander the Great's attempt at Universal Homonia. Europe has had its order tested, from the Polis to Charlemagne to Luther to Hobbes to Locke to Kant etc etc /1

The US has not had the peaks and troughs Europe has had, and that is why - I would argue at least - it is not part of that same Liberal Order /2

The article in question concerns the post WW2 U.S., in which my country deviated from it's original (classical) liberal path, which it has been doing pretty much after our Civil War, the bloodiest and the most justified war in our history.

Eh the US Constitution is both a marvel and an outdated concept of Liberalism, when we were obsessed with enshrining Rights and respecting the individual to the point of codifying freedoms. I think Tocqueville ended up being correct in saying that US democracy caused man to...

...turn in on himself, isolating himself form his fellow man. By enshrining the Individual, the Bill of Rights destroyed the Collectivism that is essential to a Liberal Order. That is why the EU and US versions are different I think; they are fundamentally of different foundation

The primary evolutionary behavior of our species is cooperation, enshrined in the hardwired human brains speech center—it’s fundamental to cooperation, not coercion. Collectivism, eg., religion, Communism, Socialism, Fascism—and their variations, are collectivist ideologies.

Good article! It rationally details concerns of many “classical liberals,” vis-à-vis “nation building” antics, and the plethora of undeclared wars, which are essentially police actions.

And, “Jesus, Steven.” Seriously? Why not, “For evolutions sake, Steven!” BTW, I actually did my part in reducing CO2 emissions, by helping startup and maintaining the largest nuclear power station in the U.S. What have all the finger pointers been doing?
