Some of the new MSR and LFTR designs are much safer, cleaner, and cheaper than coal to run. And some can use the waste of current plants as fuel.

Is this article serious? Instead of using the money, that is being saved for storing the waste, to subsidize nuclear plants that have become uneconomic (!), just build new renewable plants. And the waste problem with nuclear is far larger, than with renewables. Geez.

What energy do you propose to use when peak power usage hits after 5 p.m. which is also when the solar and wind production plummets each day?

Source? In Germany peak power demand is pretty much equivalent to peak solar generation, the only "problem" is seasonal, for which you need to have a Power2Gas Backup-Reserve, some Biomass (mostly waste), Demand Side Management in the long run, in the short run you can use Gas.

Source: https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=830 … You could also just pay attention to when your electricity plan is the most expensive, which correlates to peak usage. For example, on my plan "peak" is from Monday through Friday from 3pm to 8pm, rather obviously bracketed around a 5:30pm peak.

so its different in New England than in the US mean, apparently. How big are your capacities to import electricity? If its big enough, there's no problem (otherwise you can use battery storage or gas power plants, once and if it becomes necessary)

The promise of next gen nuke is always 15 years away, I am not against research, but renewables are deploying at scale today. In the utility sector we have the technology at hand (wind and solar) to make the clean energy transition.

The lacking technology is energy storage, and peak power usage is when the sun is going down and the wind is dying down at the end of the day which greatly impact the usefulness of wind and solar energy. Nuclear runs 24 hours a day.

http://j.mp/2loqGeM  High penetration of renewables without storage is happening today. Meanwhile the price of storage is coming down dramatically, it is exciting times for energy transition led by Renewables

California, with it's mandated renewable energy percentages has to PAY Arizona to take their excess renewable energy during the day because they can't use it all, and they can't store it for use later in the day when it really needed. Do you understand how power systems function?

        1) Nuclear fission is not a process experienced firsthand by most. Everybody's experienced "fire " 2) Breeder reactors were at one time publicly considered a security risk. 3) No scientist with a great public reach promotes nuclear power as a good alternative. 4) Logic? Pffffttt.
