Pundits have been eulogizing the liberal world order, but it's not going away: it's too deeply entrenched, and it's indispensable for what nations want. Deudney & Ikenberry explain. https://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/world/2018-06-14/liberal-world?cid=soc-tw-rdr … via @ForeignAffairs

There is no guarantee that liberalism survives. Current events show how fragile it really is.

Liberalism under Obama meant immunity for criminals, "Assad must go", assassination of Gaddafi and a permanent race war and class war.

What caused a rise of US nationalism? A bad economy sparks a blame game. A welfare state creates an antiglobalist sentiment especially under a straining economy. Trump's rhetoric was heavily about being taken advantage of. There was also Obama intersectionality fueling discord.🤔

Bush, Obama and Trump have only proven that men, whether they be white, black or orange, can be third rate presidents.

A very lazy article. "Pragmatic" liberalism is no where to be seen in the current wave of utopianism re: abolishing border enforcement. Further democracy as mob rule versus a more complex social contract lies unexamined. Michael Lind had a far better article recently.

I so hope your optimism is vindicated, Professor. Things aren't looking especially bright in some places lately though, including here in the U.S.

Men like Pinker are becoming desperate and lazy. Their power and privilege in society is waning and they're scared. The basic realities of political development has, and will continue to destroy "liberalism" aka globalism and elitism.

I very much doubt we are heading for less power for an elite, but more likely an ever smaller elite with ever more power and most likely not an elected one either.

Once people stop seeing dishonest men like Pinker as sources of intellectual authority their power will come down. People just have to wake up.

It's more about a "republic" than what is considered "liberal". You can take things to the extreme left or right but that's the same as framing issues in black and white when we live in a world of colors in-between. #Deudney #Ikenberry
