USA at its best has a “flavor of Enlightenment” (Krugman quoting Myrdal), which Trump is trying to trash.https://nyti.ms/2MBpTUn

America represented, and it’s Constitution still does, the culmination of the ideas of the Enlightenment. Because certain human individuals do not, or did not, wish to reach for the higher values the Enlightenment represents, does not negate the better life those ideas enabled.

Krugman is a Democrat operative who has no credibility. Poor fella needs to get out of the Democrat echo chamber and stop the chicken little nonsense when a republican is in office.

No, like what America aspired to with "Liberty and Justice for all". Donald "let's skip due process" Trump sadly isn't that.

Liberty and Justice for all CITIZENS, not the world, or who broke laws.

Which of the federalist papers was it again that said "let's skip due process"? I keep forgetting.

Hyper-Moral arguments are not just dying, they are dead. It's why Trump won. The public has woken up to the nearsightedness of inaccurate, incomplete and knee jerk moral stances. It's why when Trump is attacked by both left and right with with virtue signals his power increases.

USA without the infusion of waves of talented migrant during and after second world war is more or less like India just a window dressing, bunch of con artists fine tuned to grab money, manipulating anything and everything. Racists for guns, casteists for entitled grand worldview

Enlightenment values failed when they were used to justify importing millions from the 3rd world who don’t believe in enlightenment values.

What's most disheartening is the 40% of the population who think enlightenment values are "America's problem."

So, American Enlightenment ended by DJT. Not the unending wars of regime change and the expenditure of blood and treasure, the over incarceration of non-violent drug offenders, or the crushing of civil liberties by the surveillance state.

Incidentally, I say that not as a Trump supporter (I'm anything but) As for the rest of @paulkrugman's take, it is unfortunate that the Left has spent the last ~30 years attacking the concepts of American Exceptionalism & US Hegemony. And only now (too late?) they embrace it.
