I got into Columbia and cost of attendance was $80K/year. They offered me (coming from a single father family that grossed $35,000/yr) $7000. Please.

In other words, if you're poor, you can afford to go to top colleges? Some claim lol

Ivy league schools offer massive if not full scholarships to people under a certain income who get accepted. Getting accepted is another story

There's a similar debate in the UK which @MartinSLewis occasionally gets stuck into with fervour. Politicians grossly exaggerate the cost of universities in order to score political points. Thereby scaring away poorer people from realising their full potential. It's a disgrace.

How poor? My son is looking at colleges right now and he may not be able to get into Harvard, but he has a chance. I am a public school teacher so we haven't even thought of applying.

That's the thing, for all the whining (looking at you Bernie Sanders) the lowest income USAers get education (financial aid) and healthcare free (Medicaid) or subsidized (through the exchanges) already.

Not poor & smart, but rather poor & good at taking standardized tests: Skills with some correlation but in no way infer each other.
