Standard Arabic is Declining. 1 reason is that few books are translated into Arabic: Fewer than Penguin Random House publishes; 1/5 as many as are translated into Greek.http://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/menasource/standard-arabic-is-on-the-decline-here-s-what-s-worrying-about-that#.Ww4T0Vm4_jd.twitter …

Yeah no one reads in Arabic now in my country, because they are all bad authors who only got to write because their ideas are approved of by the dictators we have. All my friends read English ...

I teach in Morocco, and I've never seen a kid with an Arabic book. They all read the French versions. I also had a problem when choosing which language to learn: MSA has lots of materials, but no-one really speaks it. Local dialect has very few materials. I went for French.

@_Saeen_ @halaljew What do you make of this? Many are using this as an argument to say Arabs are backwards, when in fact most works in Arab countries are being produced in English and French because of colonial legacies.

That's sad. The publishing output is much higher in Persian and Turkish despite having fewer native speakers than Arabic.

Is there anybody left in Arabic-speaking countries? It seems like they all packed up and left for Sweden.

As ppl in Spain..etc who learn E to get better jobs, Arabs r doing the same.Using Arabic dialects to publish (literary) books may mean that Arabs start to understand the importance of their spoken languages. But MSA will never be abandoned (language of Quran,prayers,education..)
