Irish abortion referendum is part of a massive global trend toward liberal values (gender equity, personal choice, political voice, permissive child rearing). In Enlightenment Now https://stevenpinker.com/publications/enlightenment-now-case-reason-science-humanism-and-progress … I display Christian Welzel's World Value Survey data showing the rise.pic.twitter.com/p6ptNBg961

No. Abortion has nothing to do with religion. Abortion is about killing inocent people!!. We can support LGBTQ rights and same sex marriage and women rigts. But abortion is very different

You can only make that statement once those participating in the argument agree on both "what is life" and "when does it begin". Those arguments rarely surface and the assumptions muddy the discussion.

That is correct. An embrio is a human in development... just like a newborn an infant. There is a lot of evidence for that. (genetics... embriology... neurodevelopment..) But when somebody say that an embrio has the same value than a tumor. That is just sad and wrong.

The framing of the argument is all about the transitions. Conception? Fetus? 50% development? Heartbeat? Brain waves? What is Life? When should rights be bestowed? Why protect the unborn but not death row inmates? There is certainly civil discourse when we parse the parts.

I agree And we should have a debate about all this issues. But at least agree that killing is bad. And we can change our policies about it!.

Agreed. But also a slippery slope. How about killing animals that exhibit compassion and intelligence? How different are we as humans?

Can we agree that an unwanted pregnancy is an unfortunate situation for the woman? I do hope that technology does mitigate this terrible decision for them someday. If so, we need to *consistently* answer the Sanctity of Life question at all stages of a human's development.

Trends are so clear, linear, and consistent when you just make up the pre-1980s data. The World Values Survey started in 1981. These data are linear extrapolations to the pre-1980 period (as presented in Welzel 2013) apparently with some added noise for looks? https://twitter.com/sapinker/status/1000768298324283393 …

They didn’t have the internet. And same day international travel. And dozens of western modern societies to look to. They were always more modern than the developing world. I would expect them to catch up faster now than in 1900.

Liberal values are great. I think a better liberal value is giving more money to single mothers, not legalizing the deaths of their children.

Liberals support social programs and things like health care. Your complaint is with the people who oppose those things.
