Just like everybody else, epidemiologists are facing tough choices about how to live their everyday lives in the covid era. We asked 511 of them what they think the future looks like.https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/06/08/upshot/when-epidemiologists-will-do-everyday-things-coronavirus.html …

Shoutout to
@sharpmelk, who made amazing art about epidemiology’s unofficial motto: “Well, it depends.” It applies broadly here, on the details of individuals and the encounters, and on how the epidemic unfolds.pic.twitter.com/NIDMv5UENi

But beyond the numbers, it was really eye opening to hear comments from so many experts about how they think about these questions. We’ve included a sampling of quotes in the article. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/06/08/upshot/when-epidemiologists-will-do-everyday-things-coronavirus.html …pic.twitter.com/94XFMyRRIw

Many, many thanks to the
@societyforepi for helping us reach so many epidemiologists. And to the 511 very busy scientists who took the time to share their perspectives. And to my terrific co-authors:@clairecm@qdbuiShow this thread

At least one respondent said they would *never* see a doctor for a non-urgent appointment EVER again. Were they trolling?

We ask them to crunch the numbers and predict how many human lives will be lost to this virus, and then they ask to not be hugged for a year. You are a cold bunch, epidemiologists, cold.

I'll take a hug right now. I don't want to spend the next two years not hugging people.

That’s not sad. Plenty of cultures don’t hug outside of their immediate family. Please be more open minded.

3-12 mos seems pretty broad for school/daycare. 3 mos would be August/normal school year, 12 mos would be “we aren’t having a 2020-21 school year” territory, so im still wondering about that one.
