Hmm. How much OUD begins as medical use of prescription opioids and turns into addiction to illicit substances? Has that stat risen or decreased? Gonna have to peruse those CDC data. Thanks for the update.

@headdock@BrookeM_Feldman are great sources on this. My feeling is that a lot of folks are initially using street from the get go as even the sickest patients are being denied any opioids for incurable condition pain (IC, Lupus, Cancer, Ehlers). -

Simply decreasing opioid supply without decreasing demand leads people to alternative means to maintain their addiction. Cheaper and much deadlier alternatives on the street are often what people find. Public policy must take this into account with proposed strategies for help.
