I suppose my father understood swearing as an indicator of an unrepentant and unregenerate heart. The problem, as I see it, is the training we receive in church is to judge character based on word and action conformity rather than the content and how it affects others.

For example: drinking beer is bad because drinking isn't conforming to the church's unspoken rules. In contrast, a harsh and brutal man is fine because the church's unspoken rules allow a man to rule how he wishes. Tradition!

Having friends that are bullies is fine so long as they go to church on Sunday, but having kind, compassionate friends that don't go to church is bad because it breaks the church's unspoken conformity rule.

It's goes against the church's unspoken rules of conformity to advocate for compassionate and fair treatment of laborers and the poor. But within the church's unspoken rules it's acceptable to exploit the poor and hoard all the profits for yourself, it's called "God's blessing."
