The answer to the bug is: with --strict on, Schroedinger's cat is dead; with it off, it's alive. And if you open two files with two different settings of --strict, you will see a different answer in each file.

Be sure to point out that the *actual* difference is between --strict off and on. With --strict off, null is almost a synonym for any.

i don't mind my tool being too smart, do mind when it's too complex. I think most of the time when people complain that things are "too smart" what actually worries them is complexity/inflexibility
