The one in Kansas also has a much smaller population than their counterpart in Missouri so let’s just let them enjoy this bit of spotlight

This is a high bar since (I think) many people still say Ar-KANSAS instead of Ar-Can-saw

Efforts to criticize/undermine are animated by a sense of besiegement in the battlefield of ideas, which is the same mentality that set off the legal conservative movement in the early 1980s. You don't unscrupulously undercut your opponents. You win on the ideas.

So I checked out this bagel shop near work today which turned out to be cash only. “You can still take the bagel, just pay us next time.” Yet she asked me where I’m *originally* from so it was all a wash. 🤦🏻‍♀️

true that there's no need to be ashamed. I'll just add that even when every sign makes you believe that it will go somewhere, still be grateful (and gracious) if it doesn't. There're things you don't know or have no control over.

It should be a mark of high level wokeness knowing that Lochner actually allowed vast majority of regulations in question (u got to keep cats on the bakery floors too)

Those presumptions have a pernicious underbelly in the sense that ur simultaneously superhuman (having superior intelligence owing to ur race) and “subhuman” (personhood solely based on the value of ur technical skills). The former makes us agnostic, or worse, blind to the latter

Turning ppl away out of public charge concerns, even if used in a discriminatory manner, still is *in no way* comparable to the horror of seeking to extinguish a minority group. The analogy was WAY off, there's no way to salvage it

The word "deprive" makes it sound like college admins have a lot of power/agency, but in reality they're just as susceptible and vulnerable to the myriad of demands from student progressives

I'm not disputing the importance of the diaspora narrative or seeing classes that address immigrant identity. But the immigrant perspective will wear off one day, a point when many AA will have been here for more than 5 generations. What will be the claim of representation then?

It's a new political philosophy that departs from Britain, despite having inherited its jurisprudence. Rather than just cuisines, I hope to see AA contributions that reinvigorate the American political and social fabric, at a time of global competition in institutional governance

Liu ofc has ignored the cultural achievements of AA that rival the Jewish Americans he references. But the underlying point is valid. The core of the country is not different groups coming together and attaining social mobility. It's a new and distinct political philosophy

"It was a Jewish playwright who immortalized the phrase 'the melting pot.'” And what was Hollywood, but the invention of Jews who wanted to invent another America? . . . The Jew changed our human, our law, our literature. The Asian, so far, has changed our food."

I've seen one answer that quite accurately captures my concerns, albeit in a poignant way. Eric Liu, in his autobiographical essays, explains how he sees Asians as markedly different from Jews, despite the two groups often being bunched tgt(There's even a book titled "Jewasians")

For AA to adequately demand representation, the community itself needs to have thought through the crucial question: what exactly is the nature and extent of the community's contribution to the country.

representation in cultural influence is not something a group is entitled to. It hinges on the contribution of that group to the national cultural, civic and political fabric.

The reason why I felt unfulfilled about listening to those narratives is that I think there're larger and deeper issues at play, which I don't see being brought up anywhere. Unlike representation in the political/electoral context,

I was always left intellectually unfulfilled after attending those events. My last year in college, a working group on campus was pressuring the college to implement an AA studies major, in contrast to Asian studies (a distinction that eluded the school administration)
