One thing I think is important to recognize here is that there's a difference between an open source project that is intended to be generic and reusable, vs an open source project that is extremely specific to one use case. The AO3 codebase is extremely specific.

People defending AO3 will say "the code is available, go make your own Archive according to your own standards" - which is as easy as fighting Google's stranglehold on internet searches, or making your own social media site. Sure, it's POSSIBLE, but it's a disingenuous argument.

so the timeline for otw/ao3's plan to hire a diversity consultant (just! hire someone!) is sometime in the next five years. THE NEXT. FIVE. YEARS.

It's been a while, but the Snowflake Challenge on DW had the prompt "scream into the void", so what could be more fitting than another post about the OTW's failure to make "AO3 a better environment for Black fans and fans of color" (their words, not mine)! naye.dreamwidth.org/2390526.html

It’s just funny that as the quality of everything from airlines to infrastructure to food safety and availability to healthcare continues to precipitously erode around us millions of people blame socialism, an economic system that we do not live under

you look at a Toblerone package, long, triangular, and think “there’s no way it’s that shape”, and you’re right, it isn’t that shape. it’s in a way weirder shape, a far more fucked up shape than you could ever have anticipated.

friend of mine asked for an infodump about why i think the new who trailer looks like ass, maybe not necessarily knowing that i have spent most of my adult life at this point wondering why so much digital cinema looks like ass. anyway here's what i said:

I disagree with some of the orderings on here but I did add like ten things to my "to watch" list!

Please stop giving villains in books messy teeth or skin conditions or scars or disabilities. And don’t make them short and/or fat either. It equates disability and/or fatness with evil. And publishers should be questioning + addressing these things in the editing process.

The Party of Insurrection has selected a Speaker by cutting a deal with its most hateful faction. But know this—we will fight with everything we’ve got to mitigate the policy violence they intend to inflict. And in 2024, we will deliver the House back to the people.

It feels like US TV shows (in particular streaming shows) are moving more and more towards a model of telling longer stories, but so many end up getting cut off at the knees before they even get out of the exposition that there's no point.

I remember when I used to get excited about new Netflix-owned shows. Then the combination of sticking their logo on everything and cancelling what they do own ruined it for me.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Netflix have done irreparable damage to their brand by constantly cancelling things, they have effectively trained their own audience never to get invested in any of their shows. It's short term cost-cutting, long-term harm. twitter.com/whatonnetflix/…

As we enter January’s toxic diet culture, a reminder that BMI isn’t a measure of health, but was invented by a statistician based on white men, in the 1800s when Ketchup was branded a medicine, cocaine was available in every pharmacy and vibrators were prescribed for ‘hysteria’.

The U.S. labor market has been so lopsided in bargaining power for capital for so long that bosses are confused and terrified when it shows signs of functioning like a real market, such as when employees do things like declining to do extra work without pay.
