The Jewish custom of circumcision began during their babylonian exile when Jewish leaders were keen to make a distinction between Jews and the uncircumcised babylonians. It was later added to the Bible to make it seem it was sanctioned by God

Didn't the desert sand have anything to do with circumcision? I mean the sand grits would have gone under the foreskin?
