To avoid this terrible discrimination, private dchool pupils should have a protected quota: exactly 6.5% of students at each university, representative of their numbers across the UK, to make sure they aren’t unfairly locked out.https://twitter.com/DawnHFoster/status/1222462584613371904 …

I remember when I was applying to university, lots of Oxbridge colleges boasted they were ‘inclusive’ because they were 50/50% private/state and I just hope they weren’t also teaching maths.

State school pupils outperform private school kids, so there really is no excuse for the institutional bias against working class studentshttps://www.timeshighereducation.com/news/cambridge-study-details-state-school-students-advantage-over-private-school-peers …

There are lots of systemic biases, but IMO the biggest single problem is the interview system. Public school students overperform in interviews because they’ve been coached their whole lives to assume they will succeed.

There are also the costs- and confidence needed- to actually get on a train and get yourself to the interview. Incredibly intimidating (and expensive if you live a long way away).

This is so true. 8 years on, I can say my interview at Cambridge remains to this day the most humiliating and belittling experience of my life. I felt very stupid and uneducated and common for a long time after.

Hell I didn't even get as far as applying, even the open day was a pretty crushing experience
