the programmer and I talked over email. "I'm not a voyeur, I'm a technology enthusiast,” he said. I'm so, so tired of hearing this from male engineers and programmers who exploit women and call it a hobby.pic.twitter.com/zNFwTCc3Ca
huge credit to PC gamer @emanuelmaiberg for being a hero and testing DeepNude out; it took him seconds to go from downloading the software, to the results you see in the piece.
in a way, this is much worse than deepfakes: you're a couple clicks away from nonconsensual fake nudes
This article is wildly irresponsible. Giving free promo to something like this while also giving examples which could easily make the REAL PEOPLE you used it on feel violated. Was there no other way to write this story?
Do you know what you get when you google the name of this app? The VICE article and thousands of links to makeup. There are two Reddit threads, total, that mention it. One by the app's creator from months ago, which was ignored; and one that references your article.
This app simply does not exist in the public consciousness without your article. All you've done is help it find its audience. You even conveniently advertise how affordable it is. Shame on you.
"The algorithm only works with women, Alberto said, because images of nude women are easier to find online"

Well thank goodness this is out there now so that a bunch of pervs who would have never heard about it otherwise can now run out and get it.
Seriously, why promote it?
I wanted to share this article but 1. you link to the app, so this piece is guiding people right to the abusive product and 2. a photo of a person who didn’t consent to this is used. I know we don’t always have control over the latter element but... this feels very irresponsible.
@elizabcking SERIOUSLY!? “We hate this abusive rapey app....HERE ARE ALL THE LINKS TO GO AND TRY THIS SHITTY APP. Bonus points to engage in non-consensual activity for yourself!”
Make it make sense??!!??
Adding that a male editor is a “hero” for making the images later in the thread is the cherry on top of this mess. A real shame.
Why are people so fucking messy!?
you literally are advertising this service. nice one.
It looks like @VICE’s promotion of the app has done so well for them it’s crashed their server.
:-(
pure vice - couldn't do the report without the unnecessary examples. could be such an important outlet, but can't get away from its sensational and salacious roots.
