“How can one check a large routine in the sense of making sure that it’s right? The programmer should make a number of definite assertions which can be checked individually, and from which the correctness of the whole program easily follows.” – Alan Turing

"Burroughs B1700 is a protean attempt to completely vanquish procrustean structures. Without inherent structure, any definable language can be efficiently. There are no word sizes or data formats—operands may be any shape or size."

: "Procrustes was the ancient Attican malefactor...he either stretched or cut short each person's legs to fit the bed's length. Von Neumann derived machines are automatous malefactors who force programmers to lie on many procrustean beds."

2/2. During the interview, I was told that there is a history of multiple official complaints related to sex-based discrimination in that dept. I was advised to reach out to those people (who obviously left) before I make up my mind.

Not the worst, but interesting events. 1/2. The dept chair of one school notified me that the dept voted to make me an offer. I never received that offer. Later heard from back channel that my non-elite background was an issue higher up!

The first day of class, 130 students. CS3330: undergrad computer architecture. I talked about how being able to analyze things critically and being able to articulate ideas and thoughts clearly will lead to new innovations and therefore, will give meanings in our lives 😜

PMTest decouples the ordering and durability guarantee from programmers. It bridges software testing with architectural innovation, as testing frameworks for persistent memory need to be designed with extensive knowledge of the underlying hardware. Maybe ? :P

Take all that and add unstructured custom applications that need to force ordering and persistency, but differently for each hardware ISA and persistency model! That is what we need to solve for crash consistency bugs in persistent memory applications!

The systems community has been fascinated by crash consistency bugs in file systems for decades. The architecture community has been fascinated by memory consistency models and transactions for decades.

: Pretty disappointed that PMTest (ASPLOS 2019) did not get in. Janus (ISCA 2019) got an honorable mention. PMTest: Janus:

If you're trying to be the best in the world at something, remember that you probably have a lot less competition than you think. You're not competing against everyone in the world - just everyone crazy enough to think they have a chance. Everyone else just quits without trying.

Giving/receiving advice is tricky! Receiving: Too specific based on personal experience or a superset of N ways which is impossible for one person to follow. Giving: Many times people just want to validate one option they have in mind and are not looking for a true suggestion!
