    I am super excited to announce that I am creating a special new book: Full-stack JavaScript Web Development It's special because of its scope and because it'll have adaptive and interactive components. Read all about that in this preview article

    Today's bug is brought to you by Amazon. It's ok to ship software with edge-case problems. There's no way u'll get things right 100% from the first attempt. Even highly-paid engineers don't. I'm creating a course about this topic. Sign up at for updates

    The article features 4 beginner-level prep chapters from the book. Very basic content if you're already programming but essential nonetheless.

    I should have mentioned that this is an 800 pages book. The medium article is just the prep chapters. I just pushed the publish button on this one and I'll be publishing 2 more articles like this from the book.

    Who is ready for this??? At 42 min read, this article is clearly the answer to life, the universe, and everything. (I promise I was not shooting for exactly 42... It just happened and was a cool thing to see) Publishing Tomorrow.

    I explain scopes and closures in this article:

    3/ Scopes & closures are different. The console.log line will use the closure of f1(), which is created when we define f1(), which means the closure of f1() gives us access to only the scope of f1() + the global scope. The scope where we execute f1() doesn't affect that closure.

    2/ What do you think the above example will print? The code is simple, f1() prints the value of "v", which is 1 on the global scope, but we execute f1() inside of f2(), which has a different "v" that’s equal to 2. Then we execute f2()

    1/ If you understand JS closures, you should be able to explain the answer to this question ("explain", not just figure out. See thread) Will this code print 1 or 2? var v = 1; var f1 = function () { console.log(v); } var f2 = function() { var v = 2; f1(); }; f2();

    If a popular app is having this much errors and warnings, I'd say someone should probably be fired. Stop breaking the web. Hire software developers. Not programmers.

    Microsoft is investing in Git, VSCode, Electron, Github, Bash-on-Windows. Things that decentralize and help prevent lock-in. Apple is taking away the only universal cross platform graphics system (OpenGL), locking developers into Metal, and taking away our escape keys.

    One helpful idea to keep in mind when programming: A piece of software is never complete You'll not get most things right the first time You'll never make thing perfect You'll need to change things one way or another. Forever. Do yourself a favor and write tests... lots of them.

    Shopping for a decent bank (free and good APY) and CapitalOne 360 accounts sounded great but the reality turned out to be that their web app is extremely buggy (serious bugs like race conditions in the UI). How would I trust you with my money after seeing that?
