I have an unproven theory this in part explains why the Design Exchange in Toronto, Canada‘s so-called only design museum, was hard for people to wrap their heads around. Strip ‘design’ away and you realize the staff ran a Luxury Marketing Museum and Corporate Venue Rental.

moralizing the *methods* and *rhetoric* of Jane Jacobs in Toronto instead of taking a broader look at the *outcomes* she wanted has stopped people from thinking critically about the big picture. homeowners vs. developers is not the david vs. goliath story presently.

I like to think I'm a critical guy but it is very easy to get lulled into a sense of "on certain subjects I think we are doing better than our neighbours" and then someone shows you a chart with more than two countries on it.

Housing discourse has been stuck in bad faith debate abt "others" causing housing cost escalation - foreigners, then "foreign capital", immigrants, fentanyl dealers, money launders, "speculators" But if u just ask ppl they tell you that they *want* housing to cost more.

I’m glad artists are having second thoughts about NFTs b/c of environmental impact, but another reason might be to not shit in your own water supply by helping turn art into an automated stonks exchange that ultimately only makes money for celebrities and hedge funds

I wrote a bit about the things that keep sticking in my brain re: future of flexible office work: - If you’re serious about DE&I, you have to be serious about remote work. - Get ride of add-on management - Boundaries are meaningless; we need guardrails

Two of our region’s most significant design accomplishments... SFU and Granville Island. Both won by young, unproven + emergent firms for public agencies. Almost unimaginable today.
