Earth physically rotates in 23hours 56min relative to distant stars – a Sidereal Day, BUT it takes 24hours to rotate relative to the Sun – a Solar Day The difference? Earth orbits the Sun, so the Sun appears to move (down, in the vid), which means Earth needs +4mins to catch up!

“What did genes do to deserve their sinister, juggernaut-like reputation? ... Why are genes thought to be so much more fixed and inescapable in their effects than television, nuns, or books?” (Dawkins, The Extended Phenotype)

Scientists post dodgy-looking preprint that heavily implies the new coronavirus might have been engineered by humans (because it shares some features with HIV). It appears to have been debunked almost immediately.

OK, I've done it. I've written down what I really think about measurement invariance. [ducks]

My wife and I never talk baby talk to our kid. We enforce academic seminar norms and jargon. My child isn’t even 2 yet and can interrupt presenters on the first slide. Adults at family gatherings are shocked when my child asks a question that turns out to be more of a comment.

Today’s bad viral tweet “How to React to Pandemics” says to freak out b/c early severity numbers are often underestimates. That’s wrong. Early in an outbreak, reports are almost entirely the most severe cases. As mild cases are found, severity estimates often drop.

Fact 2: Docs’ preferences change over the course of a clinical shift. Towards the end of their shift, they prefer to take simpler, more straightforward cases.

Measuring police bias is indeed difficult, in large part because we generally don’t see the full pool of people police choose *not* to stop. For an example of a study that overcomes this problem, check out my interview w Jeremy West:

THREAD As the outbreak continues, a lot of data emerging in real-time & being rapidly disseminated. I compiled the available data (in no particular order) to have a better understanding of & will update the list as more info become available.

published a study last year claiming no racial bias in police shootings. The study's central claim was mathematically unsupported. & I submitted critique to PNAS, which was rejected. We appealed. Today PNAS published our critique.1/n

In medieval England, a spinster was a woman who worked at spinning, not at weaving. (A woman who worked at weaving was a "Webster" while a "Baxter" was a baker; yes, there are matrilineal occupational surnames in English! Women have always worked.)

Google Dataset Search is now officially out of beta. "Dataset Search has indexed almost 25 million of these datasets, giving you a single place to search for datasets & find links to where the data is." Nice work, Natasha Noy and everyone else involved!

How to remember your Chinese provinces - "Bei" is north and "Nan" is south. Hebei = north of "He" (river); Henan = south of river. Hubei = north of lake, hunan = south. - "Xi" is west and "dong" is east. So Shandong = east of mountain; Shanxi is west. Or Guangdong and Guanxi.
