What on Earth is "Cancel culture" aside from "social consequences for expressing unpopular opinions in public?" J. K. Rowling hasn't been jailed or paid a fine. Should be people be forced to continue to buy Goya beans regardless of what their CEO says?

I hate the term "cancel culture." Isn't it really just accountability?

When regular people hear “cancel culture” they think about tearing down statues of Columbus. Most people are completely oblivious to internal squabbles in center-left publications.

"Should expect" is, unfortunately, the kind of phrasing that I think can give misleading results. I think one should *expect* social consequences for expressing unpopular opinions, because that is what I see happening. A few years ago, I wouldn't have expected such consequences

But I think what they were getting at is, "Do you approve of social consequences for expressing unpopular opinions?" There my answer would be mostly no, excepting in the most egregious of cases. Expecting <> approving.
