Why?
Because it made US a net energy exporter, and reduced Europe's dependence on Russia. Were it not for shale gas, Putin would have had far more leverage on Europe today.

Overall the book is a great read, covers events that have gone to alter human history and goes to identify common patterns among them as well

Makes sense. Reducing dependence on Russia and the Middle East gives the US more leverage with Europe and against Russia. There are so many stories like this in US history. The meta point is that US innovation and economic engine saves the day more often than not.
