Piero Castellano added,
Yes, but more explicit here as a twisted ideology and relevant to whether we class the attack as terrorism - I would argue yes. Not an isolated case of mental illness but a stated intent to incite terror.
Totally agree. They've bought into this perpetual victimhood vile ideology and then have used it as a 'sword' against society. The question then becomes, instead of labeling, finding out the phenomena pushing white males to this.
Mutual support and the vacuum of the internet in which rage-driven fantasies take shape...? I’m not sure we can point to phenomena as such or we fall into the trap of blaming others, as they do. It seems to me this is the worst of human nature, enabled.
Well established privilege feels like normality and has often been depicted as "law of nature" (ie apartheid in SA, slavery in CSA). When equality brings loss of status frustration is physically painful, can motivate any crime, like a personal or sexual perceived lebensraum
Physically painful? Blue balls? Again, not sure I’m comfortable with making it a proper Condition.
Anything perceived as an existential threat can make people actually suffer to the point of rejecting rationality and embrace violence. The syndrome of being surrounded by overwhelming, inhuman enemies was crucial in the white South African racists and Israeli zealot settlers.
It doesn't need to be real, reading posts of these people (including many women) the feeling of desperation is palpable. many catholic fanatics in Italy are convinced that gender equality will bring chaos, disaster and eternal damnation, for subverting "laws of nature"
And the otherhand too we have seen a lot more radicalisation in this 21st century by a number of groups, and to me this incel ideology is another example of that - it follows the hallmarks though of what we have seen before (https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/researchpapers/Documents/radicalisation-and-violent-extremism-causes-and-/Radicalisation%20eBrief.pdf …),
Yes - and the Minassian and Rodger attacks would fall into the category of “violent extremism” according to your link
Thank you both your time with this discussion, very much appreciated @Alevscott and @PieroCastellano.
