Not initially. Currently they pump CO2 down to break the rocks and release the Nat Gas. Much cleaner than coal and stores some CO2. Once a few dozen Gigs of solar and wind come online the Nat Gas power can wind down.

This is what Trumpists think will destroy the economy? It'd make obsolete the energy companies that continue to get massive subsidies and tax breaks from the govt unless they shift to renewables. We'd be more efficient and better able to cope with climate change.
