One fact the COVID-19 crisis highlights is that the financial constraints on U.S. public policy are self-imposed. Congress is debating a $1.6 trillion-plus bill and nobody‘s asking “how are we gonna pay for it?” They all know the answer: borrow the cash because they can.

The coronavirus crisis is an extremely unique situation, yes, and that is of course factored into policymaking. But U.S. capacity to borrow money at low interest didn’t suddenly increase — it’s been true for generations through good times and bad.

Wait. So all those dumb debate questions were just in bad faith? You dont say. Almost like the press aren't really honest actors.

You're correct, but as a matter of macroeconomics you can't do that because it would take money back out of the economy that the stimulus bill is trying to put in, so under the present emergency it would be counter-productive.

All of the concern trolling and bad faith questions have always been there to hold back progress and dismiss the left. Austerity and means testing and all the "but socialism" nonsense has always been a huge, self-perpetuating facade
