In the category of labels we should reconsider: imposter syndrome. Can we instead place a little more focus upon the syndrome of overconfident, power-seeking, rash and self-assured decision-making? And take hats off to leaders who say “I still have a lot to learn.” Thanks!

Rule #1 for innovation is that it is done by people. If you want to create an innovative environment, design for people. Give them light, freedom, fun, and permission. Reward them for experimentation. Do not shame them for failure. And let them control the thermostat, dammit!

I know a lot of people - especially women - my age who feel the same way. So much energy for getting their questions answered, smarts to do it. It is not appealing or logical to leave our careers behind to do it. I would do a part-time PhD program now and love it.

The literature around these questions is full of holes. It turns out, at 45, I need the disciplines of economics and industrial engineering to answer them. (So no regrets - a PhD in molecular biology would have done me no good!)

Today, however, having seen my next chosen industry crash and be reborn, having experienced function and dysfunction across a Fortune 100 company, philanthropy, and non-profit institutions, having studied what is known & probed what is unknown, let me tell you, I have questions!

With few exceptions, that person's questions were inherited from someone else, whose questions were inherited from someone else. Many of the questions trace back to a different time and place with different values. They are patriarchal values from a different world.

In your 20s, when most people go to grad school, you don't have enough lived experience to know what questions interest you enough to spend 4-6 years answering them. The system directs you to a PI, and you study that person's questions.

Here is something I can't stop thinking about: why is there no avenue for a mid-career, experienced professional to conduct research part-time and pursue a PhD while doing so?

Super fascinating study. There is always a "why" behind the "what."

Had a wonderful visit to @kennesawstate yesterday. What a true gem! The @BagwellCenter did an event around rideshare. I began my lecture by unpacking the 3 reasons why females earn less than males on Uber. I then discussed left-digit bias and policing. ideas.repec.org/p/feb/natura/0

Could someone please employ ChatGPT to re-invent Below the Root and all my 80s Apple IIc text adventures? Thanks. I still want to play them on Apple IIc though.

Entrepreneurs: Do you recognize this guy? You know, he's the one who is always at the ready to flush your next great business idea down the toilet. Pay no attention to him. He wouldn't know a good idea if it grabbed him by the tail. Keep dreaming and doing.

When I work with students to “painstorm” problems they are passionate about as a foundation for creating a business, this is #3 most common (after food insecurity and climate change-related probs). Always collecting examples of ventures (for profit or non) working in this space.

Replying to @chrissyfarr
Narrative evolved to be an efficient way to spread knowledge of facts between humans. Over time, our brains co-evolved with narrative. Eventually narrative became disconnected from facts. Today narrative is the enemy of truth; good lies are easier to remember and spread.
