Twitter is a trash box where I post about my politics and a lot of boring-ass hobbies. I love you all. (he/him)

So, feminism. What's GoT's feminist statement? Here's the contrast Mendelsohn homes in on:pic.twitter.com/kQ57cJptgP
Thesis: Cersei is the bad feminist because she wants what men have, Dany is the good feminist because she is a compassionate mother-queen?
But, wait, isn't Cersei a realist here? I mean, the narrative world she inhabits is "Tacitean."pic.twitter.com/ppmx9DmxIS
It's a story about how power and abuse are pretty much inseparable, right? Except when Dany "earns" it?pic.twitter.com/LZSDIx4avJ
Okay, so how come Dany gets to be a downright revolutionary figure while Cersei is mostly just fucked over by her society?
Westeros is grimy feudal Europe. The whole weight of its history is pressing down on you, enforcing your role.
Essos is a sword-and-sorcery adventure land full of "exotic" locales. Come, hero, tread their jeweled thrones under your sandalled feet!
It's paper cutouts. Easy to imagine them being pushed over because there is no social inertia, no history there.
What I find interesting here is how it's historiographic and fantasy-writing tradition coming together to do this.
I don't think Martin sat down to write "white men > white women > people of color."
But look at how gritty-bloody intrigue-laden history and sword-and-sorcery exotification blend together.
