I have been debating wether or not I should file an appeal (I should eventually, just to access my own docs that were blocked without a warning). However, I will not file an appeal atm. It's a US company that has to follow US laws. Perhaps you could try setting up Gitlab CE on the university servers or see if you can use Bitbucket?
