A very thought provoking op-ed from Dr Cheryl Benard on how women's rights cannot be imposed by the West and how Afghan women need to take charge - this must be an internal struggle and the only way they will be able to prevailhttps://nationalinterest.org/feature/afghan-women-are-charge-their-own-fate-45777 …

All I see here is organization. @AfgWomen4Peace @drops_afg @ShaharzadAkbar what do you think? "I were an Afghan feminist, then I wouldn’t spend my time complaining that the Americans haven’t pulled out a chair for me “at the table.” I’d march up to the table on my own."

One only needs to read her early works, before recommending nonsense as "thought provoking." This piece is just an adjustment to spousal work. It least cares about institutionalizing the "human security" needs of #AfghanWomen, which she used to advocate for in early 00s. #RAND!

With respect, it is quite bold, but truly criticized and looking forward to read some logical counter arguments? Not emotional statements please

Only the last last bit on what the talibans will or will not impose on women is thought provoking

Don’t worry Saad- your “interim govt” is on the way and I’m sure you’ll bow down accordingly so Tolo can thrive and you can sip pomegranate juice at the Serena or perhaps enjoy a drink or two with “Agha Baradar” - already positioning yourself for the coming “Oh Saigon moment” eh?

U must b suggesting by ur bold endorsement of “Dr.” Benard’s that female members of ur family will move to Kabul to struggle for those rights that r so “thought provoking” to u right? Surely they’ve done nothing to EARN rights they enjoy in the West. @AletaFMiller @FroghWazhma

This is poorly done. She establishes US as d savior throughout, makes oversimplified & generalizing claims, has no knowledge of Feminism(s) in AFG,essentializes women's struggles as a solely Western concept & positions herself as an authority, deciding what AFG feminists should do.

This conservative ideology was originally created by the west in #FATA. In order to justify their failure of course now it became an internal struggle.

There is some merit in this article. We remain a highly misogynistic society. However, we know these issues so no new revelations and nothing “thought provoking!” And by handing us over to the Taliban you ain’t helping us with our misogyny and radicalism...

Afghan women have been in charge all along! Sad Dr Benard doesn’t recognize the dedicated sacrificial fight that afghan women (and some men) have exerted as such! Western involvement has in many ways impeded rather than supported women’s advancement.
