    Without alternatives those in Daraa signed a reconciliation agreement with the Assad regime in mid 2018 to avert a disastrous military confrontation, restore peace, and expel foreign militias that had gained presence in the area.

    Despite the agreement that established Daraa as a military de-escalation zone the Assad Regime launched a military campaign with the objective of putting an end to a 7 year rebel rule and restoring territorial control over Daraa  in June 2018

    We urge the international community to act swiftly to protect Afghans who are risking their lives to flee. As we watch Afghans desperate to leave behind their country we are reminded of the verse by poet Warsan Shire: “no one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark”.

    The hearts of the Syrian American Council members are with the Afghans who suddenly face increasing oppression and loss of freedom and democracy. Especially in our thoughts are women, girls, and other minorities that will become targets by the Taliban.
