LW uses “map” instead of “representation” in order make it seem like the relationship is straightforward *in general*. That hides the central problem on which the whole story founders.

if you take a smart person, age 20, and then try introducing her to people who say "hm, have you tried...loosening up and being more confident? try it, it's fun, we're doing it and we haven't been struck by any lightning bolts yet!" the results are pretty dramatic.

The confluence of information theory, algorithmic information theory, decision theory, and epistemology was clarifying for me. Some of the big ideas/goals/ambitions were and continue to be inspiring, though not everything holds up, of course.

I had already been wrestling with “where do ontology and concepts come from” for years, so I got to be triumphantly annoyed with the sequences while also having a lot of fun with it.
