My biggest gripe with LessWrong culture is its almost universal humorlessness. It's shocking how few jokes Rationalists make, and how many they don't get. You don't see this critique made often because the only people stodgier than rats are those who hate and sneer at them.

All of my optimistic and positive thoughts start with "well, at least I can see the funny side of it". And when I die, I'm sure that on some level it's going to be totally hilarious and I hope someone who knows me well will notice and giggle.

it definitely doesn’t have to, though! There’s an unfortunate association caused by the overrepresentation of cynical humorists

probably cuz comedy (at least in the west) is predominantly made up of people who have unpleasant lives that being said I think self-actualization aligns with a good sense of humor. think about the stereotype of a legit guru who's funny as hell and doesn't take themselves srsly

whoah! interesting that you think this! last time someone thanked me for bringing humor, it was at a kitchen table where folks were all just feeling deeply glum about covid & personal situations... it felt like levity was the way to hold both "it's sad" and "we still have joy"

The more I’ve developed empathy for sundry folks, the more my style of humour has drifted into silly, punny, gross-out, and especially absurdist territory, because it means nobody’s getting made the butt of a joke—rather than “punch down” vs. “punch up”, it’s “no punch”

I think humor is a HUGE part of staying positive. Laughing is so good for your body, mind, and soul. I don’t want to live in a post-laughter world. Some of the most rational people I know are the funniest because their rationality gives them perspective.

I think english language humor tends to self deprecating mostly. I sense a very different kind of humor whether speaking with Americans or Brazilians. I would say humor in Latin america is to the optimist side

Who honestly could think cracking a joke, even a cynical one, tends towards anti-optimism? If you think cracking a joke, even a cynical one, tends to entail cynicism why would that be? Cynicism is (rather obviously) generally a display of hope that better times are coming

That’s why we have things like, you know, the blues as a musical phenomenon
