My biggest gripe with LessWrong culture is its almost universal humorlessness. It's shocking how few jokes Rationalists make, and how many they don't get. You don't see this critique made often because the only people stodgier than rats are those who hate and sneer at them.

i'm very in favor of optimism and positive thinking and i think humor tends to go against those things

All of my optimistic and positive thoughts start with "well, at least I can see the funny side of it". And when I die, I'm sure that on some level it's going to be totally hilarious and I hope someone who knows me well will notice and giggle.

Taking it seriously is often more fun/interesting than making another joke. In some situations, joke-chains are great. But often, jokes are a great untapped source of interestingness to look at. Then respond to serious things with jokes. Or both simultaneously

Jokes can be thought-stopping (and thus annoying). But being humourless can be thought-stopping too. So, ideal is like: non-insecure ability to flow freely to joke territory w/o getting caught up and losing train of thought unless it's a situation where that's more interesting.
