The real tech origin story is almost always something like “I wanted to make my own levels for doom so I learned to code” or “I was fascinated by explosions so I started to learn the chemistry” or “i wanted to customize my neo pets page so I learned html”

There are corners of finance that look like tech in this respect, but overall it seems to do more of the very-long-hours-to-signal-commitment thing, with initial pay per hour significantly lower than tech and only rising after you win some tournaments.

For people I know giving up on (academia, policy, nonprofit work, art, journalism) and looking for a second-choice career to pay the bills, I think tech is usually a much better and more feasible option than finance.
