And this intense knee-jerk reaction I'm seeing about "EUGENICS=BAD" just... like... ok yes i understand that it has been used for very bad things but that does not inherently make it bad. You seem to be ok with people aborting down syndrome fetuses, so at least be consistent.

my pet theory, which i also thought was everyone else's pet theory so it's interesting to see that it isn't, is that eugenics = hitler and after the death of god hitler is the closest thing we have to satan; they fulfill mythological roles and need to be understood mythologically

QC @QiaochuYuanthis helped clarify a dynamic for me. in the same way there's a "god-shaped hole," there are "X-shaped holes" for X a bunch of deep, fundamental concepts like sin, and any sufficiently mature ideology eventually adapts to fill these holes one way or the other https://twitter.com/cognitivicta/status/1188178839949602816 …Show this thread1 reply 0 retweets 5 likes -

the mythological role of hitler as satan is also IMO one of the driving forces behind how extreme and terrible the discourse around "nazis" has been

This seems true. It also reminds me of "who was the Satan before Hitler?" which some people have answered for me but I totally forgot who it was.

The literal Devil, probably. Also: the prototype metonym for bloodthirstiness was often a “savage” — cannibals, human sacrifice, Genghis Khan, Attila the Hun, etc. Lots of 1910’s-1920’s stuff about scary Africa (or other “primitive cultures”) representing the horror within us.
