She was extremely poor and had severe health problems, and she was the first person I encountered who wrote about what that was like, and insisted that people pay attention to what effects their actions had on lives like hers.

She believed that everyone matters, and that we are responsible for each other. She meant that in a concrete, practical sense, and lived accordingly.

That is a very hardcore and unsettling perspective if you take it as seriously as she did. I’m not always sure what to make of it. But it seems important to know about that perspective and be able to ask “What would Mel Baggs think of this?”
