So, of *course* I don't have accurate beliefs about how money or business works; that knowledge would be futile to acquire, because it's about a world I'm already locked out of. There's no "yum factor" to learning about it.

The thing is I think truly poor people usually understand prices a lot better than politicians do. If people are starving bc they can’t afford food, rioting etc. is a decent plan. But why doesn’t Cuomo seem to understand prices?

(can you catch me up on what Cuomo did that means he doesn't understand prices?)

Yeah sorry, lots of interlinked threads. It’s possible he does understand prices and is communicating strategically. My prior is against.https://twitter.com/diviacaroline/status/1245074224315658240?s=21 …

Divia Eden @diviacarolineI’ve been trying to stop myself from tweeting this... It seems incredibly short-sighted and stingy to fight over the surplus from these trades. Who cares???? Lack of fiscal authority to buy is a real issue. “But what if the manufacturers profit” should not be a consideration. https://twitter.com/NYGovCuomo/status/1245024479891329028 …Show this thread1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

sorry to be dense but I need help understanding this. Sounds like Cuomo thinks that a single purchase from the US Government could negotiate a cheaper bulk rate from suppliers than 50 state governments buying separately?

Sorry, I’m very triggered about this. Not at you. At the world. So on priors I’m probably communicating like an idiot. Cuomo can figure out what the ventilators are worth to the state of NY and offer that. So can other states.

ohhhh sorry I'm dumb. different states have different priority needs for ventilators so they should pay different prices. that helps "ration" ventilators to where they're most needed. oh-kay.

yeah I remain confused as to why Cuomo doesn't understand this and why I didn't until this minute.

do you have a model for why he doesn't get this?

I think maybe he isn’t incentivized to get it this time bc the fiscal situation is so confused and dysfunctional? But I don’t feel satisfied with that answer, bc so many people don’t get it.

hm, so let's assume he cares about saving NY lives -- maybe imperfectly, but enough that he's one of the more active governors. He should expect that if supplies purchasing was nationally centralized he'd be *less* likely to get ventilators to his state, right?

the missing intuition is "I want to have the option to pay EXTRA to make SURE I'm first in line to get the good thing"

That was a "missing intuition" for me too; it took me a bit to get it.
