Its preventative, not necessarily to treat infection. Might be too early to tell people something does not work unless you know first-hand a thousand infected or immune persons where that is true. Its like saying masks don't reduce the rate of spread.

There is a study from Italy that seems to suggest low levels of vitamin D could be a significant risk factor (perhaps you could frame it as vitamin D having protective effect). What about that? Are there any known connections between levels of vitamin D and immune function?

confounded to hell. Sicker people go outside less and get less Vitamin D. You're probably picking up comorbidities or a sedentary lifestyle.
