PSA: in medical documents, when they use the word "ventilator", they usually mean the kind that requires intubating the patient and has very precise pressure and volume control.

Agreed there's an important difference, but do we know which it is? Oxygen masks don't mechanically ventilate at all.

I have a post I'll put up in a bit, but for now: in a randomized study of patients with acute respiratory distress, oxygen masks & non-invasive ventilation had the same risk of needing to escalate to intubation.
